R. Pouillon & Fils Rosé de Maceration Extra Brut, Champagne, France (750ml)
WINEMAKER'S NOTES:
This wine is 100% pinot noir from the premier cru Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Fabrice macerates the juice on the skins for up to 12 hours before it is pressed and fermented in enamel and neutral barrique. 80% of the wine continues elevage for 8 months, while 20% is racked to neutral barrique where it ages for 18 months. At 8 months of elevage the current year’s wine is blended with the 18-month aged wine from the previous year to complete the assemblage. Doing so allows Fabrice to balance the tannins which naturally come from saignée rosé with the mellowness which comes from time in neutral barrel.
TASTING NOTES:
In the glass this very unusual rosé champagne looks like a pale-colored pinot noir red, then comes the intensely flinty nose. However, there's also plenty of raspberry fruit. Structured, dry and powerful on the palate with a bright mineral acidity and emphatic mousse that make this super-clean at the finish.

The NV Brut Rosé is a pure Pinot Noir picked in Mareuil-sur-Ay and vinified in oak as pink wine after a short maceration, 80% is from the 2018 vintage, 20% from 2017, also aged in oak. The deep pink color leads onto fresh raspberry aromas followed by juicy cherry. This is energetic and vibrant, with rounded body, generous fruit, strawberry and cream ripeness and a certain mellow richness. The frothy mousse is playful and soft, only adding to that sense of roundness. Underneath, however, there is poise and depth. Ebullient on the surface, classy deeper down. Dosage is 5gr/L. Disgorged: fourth trimester of 2020, Lot
- Vinous, 91 pts.
Composed entirely of fruit from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ’s south-facing lower slope and vinified in oak, Pouillon’s latest NV Brut Premier Cru Rosé is based on the 2022 vintage and supplemented by 20% reserve wines from 2021—incorporating the more phenolic fractions. Its delicate hue is derived from an 18-hour maceration with the skins. Aromatically, it delivers sweet wild berries, spices and orange with a faint hint of iris. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, flavorful and gastronomic, with succulent yet vibrant acidity, a pinpoint mousse and a long, perfumed finish.
