2021 Chateau Kirwan, Margaux, France (750ml)
WINEMAKER'S NOTES:
Having been bottled in May 2023, the wine today offers lovely fresh fruit with mingling aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry. These are complemented on the palate with subtle notes of spices. The wine displays a profile of tension and great precision. The palate is smooth, and the tannins are beautifully soft. The oak is discreet and very well-integrated. The finish is long and flavoursome rather than tannic. While there isn’t the opulence or the sweetness of the previous vintages, the balance and finesse are remarkable. This is a gourmet wine and one for those who love good taste.
73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 8% Cabernet franc, 6% Petit Verdot
TASTING NOTES:
This renowned estate, owned by Bordeaux negociant Schröder & Schÿler, has produced a balanced wine, full of structured fruit as well as a core of tannins. It has the elegance that goes with the Margaux appellation and brings considerable potential. Drink from 2027.

Some oak spices still float on top of the red and blue berries with hints of vanilla and minerals. Juicy and textured on the palate with fine tannins and a refined, long finish. Better from 2024 for better oak integration.
- James Suckling, 93 pts.
The 2021 Kirwan opens with crushed rose petal, bright red-toned fruit, cedar and a hint of pipe tobacco. Fresh and vibrant, with mid-weight structure, the 2021 is a wine of understatement more than anything else. I find it refined and refreshing, two attributes that will serve it well for a number of years.

The 2021 Château Kirwan should certainly be outstanding, with the pretty, medium-bodied, elegant style of the vintage. Giving up both red and blue fruits as well as some floral notes, it has good freshness, outstanding purity of fruit, and fine tannins.
